It began in 1966 with the J-Car just after LeMans. Ken Miles was test driving the car when it crashed on an embankment, bursting into flames. The rest is heavy-hearted history. There were only 10 made, only half of which ever actually raced. However, the MKIV is known for breaking records both at home and abroad. It only ran in two races: the Sebring 12 Hours and the 24 Hours of Le Mans – the most prestigious race events in all of motorsport. It won both. These victories were no accident. Ford made sure of that. The car was specifically, painstakingly designed for endurance, designed for speed…designed to win. Each element of the MKIV was totally different from other GT40s, starting with where it was made. Unlike its predecessors the MKI and ll cars which were built entirely or partly in Europe, the MKIV was built from scratch in the United States. A little “skunk works” company called Kar Kraft built the all-new J series chassis and newly designed long, streamlined bodywork for Ford’s Special Vehicles Activity. The MKIV was easily the most radical variant of all the GT40s. Other modifications were made as well. A NASCAR-style, steel-tube roll cage was added as a direct result of beloved racer Ken Miles’ tragic death while testing the first J Car. Though it was significantly safer, the roll cage was incredibly heavy which hurt the car’s performance. The 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV #9 was on the J-9 chassis which was specifically crafted as a Group 7 Can-Am racer. It featured a powerful 3-valve, all-alloy 427 Ford V8 engine—an engineering marvel designed for blistering performance. Built to dominate, its brutal, raw power is palpable. In fact, after testing the car, legendary driver Mario Andretti said the J-9 one of the “scariest cars” he had ever driven. The P-51D Mustang is one of the most popular and iconic fighter aircraft of all time! Its unique design resulted in it delivering some of the best performance among all fighter aircraft flown in WWII. The HobbyZone RTF P-51D Mustang 450mm
P-51D Mustang 450mm is a scale replica of the legendary U.S. Army Air Corps fighter that makes learning to fly radio controlled (RC) airplanes in more places and smaller spaces easy and fun! Its ultra-micro size makes it an ideal choice for a smaller trainer model that can be flown in large yards, parks, soccer fields, and other suitable spaces where larger models can’t typically be flown successfully by first-time pilots. Best of all, it’s equipped with Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope (SAFE) technology that helps to prevent overcontrol, loss of orientation, and crashes so nearly everyone can learn to fly successfully! Beginner, Intermediate, and Experienced flight modes allow you to choose the level of stability and control you need, or are ready to try, at the flip of a switch.
And the fun doesn't stop while or after you learn how to fly! The lightweight yet extremely durable EPP airframe is equipped with a powerful electric motor that delivers long flight times and provides plenty of speed and power to perform aerobatic maneuvers including loops, rolls, and even inverted (upside down) flight in the Experienced mode. Or, if you’re not ready to perform aerobatics on your own, the P-51 can automatically perform single or even multiple loops or rolls in the Beginner or Intermediate flight modes with just a quick press of the “Aerobatics” button and by moving the control stick in the desired direction!
This Ready-To-Fly (RTF) model includes everything needed to fly in one box and is a perfect choice if you're a new RC pilot. From the 5-channel 2.4GHz controller/transmitter and the AA batteries for it, to the two 1S 400mAh rechargeable Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries and a convenient charger that can be used with a variety of USB power sources, there's nothing extra you need to buy or provide! But it was his 1965 race wins and SCCA Divisional Championship in a Shelby GT350R that helped bring him to the attention of a certain Roger Penske. This began a racing partnership that would yield legendary race wins and success for many years. The GT350 “R” model was rare indeed with only 37 ever made specifically for competitive use under SCCA rules. The car made an excellent impression on racing circuits, becoming the B-Production divisional champion 3 years in a row. In typical AFX fashion, the HO Scale version of this car comes fully decked out with even the smallest details like the racing oil cooler under the front grill and the tapered white stripes over the beautiful Guardsman blue body. Even the 5 spoke wheels are the style used when the car was raced. Nothing beats the world famous sports car, the C3 3rd generation Corvette. Designed by Russian Zora Arkus-Duntov, the body was patterned after the Mako Shark II designed in 1965. The C3 body would go on to be produced from 1968 through to 1982. Not only was the Corvette one of the coolest looking American sports cars, in its time it was also one of the fastest. Able to run at 140 mph with little to no effort, specific tires were designed to reliably sustain and stabilize the car at such high speeds.
In an effort to pack more punch in less space, Chevrolet focused on smaller-displacement engines and in 1970, they introduced the LT-1. A 350 cubic inch engine with factory rated 370 horsepower. An unprecedented size and number for sports cars at the time.
AFX Wild Fire Flames are proprietary custom designs. But we certainly weren’t the first folks to paint flames on the side of a hot rod.
The first flames to appear on a hot rod were literal flames. Captured in a perfectly timed photograph on October 20th, 1938 by the Carroll Photo Company. Driver Fred Friday zipped his car through Gilmore Stadium when his car alighted in flames from a fuel leak. The idea that a car had been driven so furiously as to emit flames inspired hot rod and muscle car fans across the country. Friday survived the race, happily, and totally unaware of what his unique race performance had ignited.
World War II followed swiftly after bringing with it the trend of “nose art” - the decorative painting of an aircraft’s front fuselage. Though originally intended to identify friendly planes, the practice quickly evolved into an expression of individuality. The aircraft “nose art” was showcased to the general public and the idea spread like, well, wildfire.
By the 1950s the custom hot rod craze peaked. Returning veterans were drawn to both the thrill of racing and the new outlet for self-expression. With the booming economy of post-war America, hot rodders and muscle car lovers brought their designs to life with access to custom parts and professional designers.
